Cultural Revolution in China
A decade of purges, Red Guards and smashed heritage

In May 1966 Mao Zedong declared war on 'bourgeois elements' in the party and society. Red Guards ransacked temples, museums and offices and persecuted teachers and officials; some 17 million urban youths were 'sent down' to the countryside. Estimates of the death toll range from hundreds of thousands to two million. The movement ended with Mao's death and the arrest of the Gang of Four in 1976.
