14 July Revolution in Iraq
Officers topple the monarchy and Iraq becomes a republic

On 14 July 1958 the Free Officers led by Abd al-Karim Qasim overthrew Iraq's Hashemite monarchy; King Faisal II and the crown prince were killed at the palace. Iraq was declared a republic, and the Arab Federation with Jordan, formed only five months earlier, collapsed.
