The Free Officers overthrow King Farouk

On 23 July 1952 the Free Officers led by Muhammad Naguib and Gamal Abdel Nasser overthrew King Farouk, who had reigned under strong British influence. Egypt was declared a republic in 1953, and in 1956 Nasser, the future leader of Arab nationalism, became president.
