Founding of the State of Israel
Ben-Gurion declares a state as war breaks out

On 14 May 1948, as the British Mandate for Palestine ended, David Ben-Gurion proclaimed the State of Israel. Neighbouring Arab states went to war, and hundreds of thousands of Palestinian Arabs became refugees. The Arab-Israeli conflict became central to the region.
