Iranian coup against Mosaddegh
Oil, the CIA and the roots of Iran's 1979 revolution

In 1951 Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh nationalised the Anglo-Iranian Oil Company. On 19 August 1953 he was overthrown by royalist army officers in a coup organised and funded by the CIA and Britain's MI6 — a role the US formally acknowledged in 2013. Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi consolidated personal rule, and memories of the coup fed the anti-Western mood of the 1979 revolution.
