Oslo Accords
Israel and the PLO recognise each other for the first time

After secret talks in Norway, Israel and the Palestine Liberation Organization signed a Declaration of Principles at the White House on 13 September 1993, sealed by a handshake between Yitzhak Rabin and Yasser Arafat. The two sides recognised each other and the Palestinian Authority was created. Core issues — borders, Jerusalem, refugees, settlements — were deferred; in 1995 Rabin was assassinated by an Israeli opponent of the accords.
