Tajikistani Civil War
A year after independence the country splits along regional lines

In May 1992 the standoff between the government and an opposition of Islamists, democrats and people from Garm and the Pamirs turned into war; forces based in the Kulob region, led by Emomali Rahmonov, took power. Estimates of the dead range from 20,000 to over 100,000, and more than a million were displaced. A UN-brokered peace was signed in Moscow on 27 June 1997.
