Chechen Republic
The Chechen Republic of Ichkeria, known simply as Ichkeria and colloquially as Chechnya, was a de facto state in the North Caucasus that controlled most of the former Checheno-Ingush ASSR from 1991 to 2000. After supporters of Dzhokhar Dudayev seized power in the Chechen Revolution of 1991, Dudayev was elected president and proclaimed independence from Russia, which received no international backing. The First Chechen War of 1994–1996 ended with the Khasavyurt Accords and the withdrawal of federal troops, but the war-ruined state could not control armed gangs, and in 1997 it was proclaimed an Islamic republic. The Second Chechen War, begun in 1999, brought Ichkeria back under Russian control in 2000; an insurgency followed until 2009. Both wars killed tens of thousands of civilians, and Grozny was almost entirely destroyed.
