Basmachi movement
After Kokand is sacked, the Fergana Valley takes up arms
In February 1918 Soviet forces crushed the Turkestan (Kokand) Autonomy and burned Kokand, killing thousands. Armed resistance to Soviet rule spread from Fergana to Bukhara and Khorezm and lasted into the 1930s. "Basmachi", roughly "raiders", was the Soviet label; participants and many historians in Uzbekistan today speak of a struggle for independence.
