Azerbaijan Democratic Republic proclaimed
The first parliamentary republic in the Muslim-majority world
On 28 May 1918 the Azerbaijani National Council declared independence; the capital was Ganja, then Baku from September. The republic, with a multi-party parliament, was among the first states anywhere to give women the vote. In April 1920 the Red Army entered Baku and the republic was abolished.
