Azerbaijan Democratic Republic
The Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was proclaimed in eastern Transcaucasia on 28 May 1918 after the break-up of the Transcaucasian Federation, with its capital at Ganja and from September 1918 at Baku. It was the first secular democratic republic in the Muslim world, and women there received the vote in 1919. In April 1920 it was overthrown by the Red Army's entry into Baku, and the Azerbaijan SSR was proclaimed.
