The Cuban Nationalists were the insurgents who fought for Cuba's independence from Spain in the war of 1895–1898, the last of three liberation wars after the Ten Years' War (1868–1878) and the Little War (1879–1880). Their government was the Republic of Cuba in Arms, which in this period was governed by the Jimaguayú Constitution. Spain sent more than 220,000 soldiers to the island and used a policy of reconcentration that caused the deaths of at least 170,000 Cubans. In 1898 the United States intervened, and the conflict escalated into the Spanish–American War.
