The rising against Spain began in February 1895; its inspiration, the poet José Martí, was killed in one of the first clashes. The Spanish general Weyler herded peasants into 'reconcentration' camps where tens of thousands died, and the explosion of USS Maine in Havana in 1898 brought the United States into the war.
