Republic of Armenia
Disputed territory. After the war of 1988–1994 Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts were held by Armenian forces and the unrecognised Nagorno-Karabakh Republic; internationally they are recognised as part of Azerbaijan. Historical borders are an approximate reconstruction from Cliopatria (Seshat Global History Databank, CC BY 4.0). Disputed territories are shown as in the source; this does not reflect a position of the project.
The Republic of Armenia, in the South Caucasus with its capital at Yerevan, declared independence after the referendum of 21 September 1991. Before the Soviet collapse the country had been struck by the Spitak earthquake of 1988, and the same year the conflict with Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh began; it escalated into war and ended in a ceasefire in May 1994. Its presidents were Levon Ter-Petrosyan, Robert Kocharyan and, from 2008, Serzh Sargsyan.
