The Burana Tower of Balasagun
A Karakhanid capital's minaret loses half its height

In the 11th century a brick minaret about 45 metres tall rose in Balasagun, one of the Karakhanid capitals. Earthquakes brought down its upper half, and the 25-metre stump now stands alone in a field of ancient stone balbal figures.
