Seljuk capture of Ani
The 'city of 1,001 churches' falls to the Seljuks
In 1064 the army of the Seljuk sultan Alp Arslan took Ani, former capital of the Armenian Bagratid kingdom and by then Byzantine, after a 25-day siege; chroniclers describe a mass slaughter of its people. The city later changed hands many times and was abandoned after the Mongol invasions and an earthquake in 1319.
