Suleiman seizes the old caliphs' capital from the Safavids
During his campaign against the Safavids, Suleiman I entered Baghdad without a fight at the end of 1534. The Ottomans gained Iraq with its Shia shrines, the Peace of Amasya in 1555 confirmed their hold, and the Persians recovered the city only from 1624 to 1638.
