The empire is auctioned off
The Praetorians sell the throne to the highest bidder

After murdering Emperor Pertinax, the Praetorian Guard announced it would sell the throne. The dead man's father-in-law offered each soldier 20,000 sesterces; Didius Julianus, shouting bids over the camp wall, offered 25,000 and won. He was killed 66 days later.
