Proclamation of the Fatimid Caliphate
Ismailis found a caliphate to rival Baghdad

The missionary Abu Abdallah al-Shi'i rallied the Kutama Berbers in the mountains of present-day Algeria and in 909 overthrew the Aghlabids, who ruled Ifriqiya for the Abbasids. In January 910 Ubayd Allah al-Mahdi, who claimed descent from the Prophet's daughter Fatima, was proclaimed caliph at Raqqada near Kairouan. The Ismaili caliphate challenged Baghdad, conquered Egypt in 969 and founded Cairo.
