Ismail Samani and the Samanid state
'While I live, I am the wall of Bukhara'
Ismail Samani united Transoxiana and Khurasan and made Bukhara his capital; legend says he refused to build city walls, declaring that he would be the city's wall. Under the Samanids Persian returned as a literary language and Bukhara became a great centre of learning.
