Haiti earthquake
A quake levels the capital of the Americas' poorest country

On 12 January 2010 a magnitude 7.0 earthquake centred near Léogâne destroyed much of Port-au-Prince. The death toll is uncertain, with estimates from 100,000 to over 300,000, and about 1.5 million people lost their homes. That autumn a cholera epidemic broke out, traced by researchers to UN peacekeepers; it killed nearly 10,000 people.
