Founding of the Iroquois Confederacy
Five warring nations agree to a 'Great Law of Peace'
According to tradition, the Peacemaker Deganawida and Hiawatha persuaded the Mohawk, Oneida, Onondaga, Cayuga and Seneca to end their wars and unite. Scholars date the founding variously, from the 12th to the early 17th century. A council of chiefs handled common affairs, while clan mothers chose and could depose the chiefs. The Tuscarora joined in 1722.
