A Lake Chad empire whose dynasty ruled for nearly 800 years

Around 700 the Kanembu nomads built the Kanem state northeast of Lake Chad, holding the southern end of the caravan route to Libya. In the late 11th century its ruler Hume of the Sayfawa dynasty converted to Islam. The state later shifted to Bornu, and the Sayfawa ruled for nearly eight centuries, until 1846, one of history's longest dynasties.
