Islam's first great monument rises in Jerusalem
In 691–692, on the orders of Caliph Abd al-Malik, an octagonal shrine was completed on the Temple Mount over the sacred rock that Muslim tradition links to the Prophet's ascension. It is the oldest surviving major monument of Islam.
