Qutayba ibn Muslim takes Samarkand
An Arab general wins Transoxiana in a decade

From 705 the governor of Khurasan, Qutayba ibn Muslim, subdued Bukhara and Khwarazm, and in 712 took Samarkand after a siege. Its king Ghurak kept his throne in return for tribute and land for a mosque; Islam came to Sogdiana, though resistance lasted for decades.
