Fall of Carthage and the Arab conquest of the Maghreb
North Africa becomes part of the Islamic world for good
In 698 the Arab general Hassan ibn al-Nu'man took Byzantine Carthage. The fiercest resistance came from the Berbers led by Queen Dihya, whom the Arabs called al-Kahina, 'the prophetess'; she fell around 701. By 709 the whole Maghreb was under the caliphate, and Berber converts formed the core of the army that crossed into Spain in 711.
