Rise of the Kazakh Khanate
Kerei and Janibek lead their clans away to Zhetysu
Kerei and Janibek, Genghisid descendants of Jochi, broke away with their people from the Uzbek khan Abu'l-Khayr and moved to Zhetysu, in the lands of Moghulistan. The breakaways came to be called Kazakhs, meaning free men. The traditional founding date of the khanate is 1465, and in 2015 Kazakhstan celebrated its 550th anniversary.
