In 374–373 BC the Persian king Artaxerxes II sent a great army under Pharnabazus and the Athenian Iphicrates, with a fleet of some 500 ships, against Egypt. Pharaoh Nectanebo I fortified the Pelusiac branch of the Nile, distrust between the enemy commanders kept them from reaching Memphis, and the annual Nile flood completed their defeat.
