In 203 at Carthage the 22-year-old noblewoman Vibia Perpetua and the slave Felicity were killed in the arena for refusing to sacrifice for the emperor's welfare. The notes Perpetua kept in prison form part of their Passion, one of the oldest surviving texts written by a Christian woman.
