Pushyamitra Shunga overthrows the Mauryas
The last Maurya is murdered, ending India's first great empire

Around 185 BC the Brahmin general Pushyamitra Shunga assassinated Brihadratha, the last Maurya emperor, and founded the Shunga dynasty. Ashoka's empire had already broken up, and the Shungas ruled only the Ganges valley and central India; Buddhist texts remember Pushyamitra as a persecutor of Buddhism.
