The Samanid Mausoleum
Lace made of brick that outlived the Mongols underground

The cube-shaped tomb where Ismail Samani lies is built of fired bricks laid in patterns that shift with the moving sun. One of the oldest Islamic buildings in Central Asia, it is said to have been buried in silt by the time the Mongols came, and it was cleared only in the 1930s.
