Vandals besiege Hippo
Saint Augustine dies during the siege

In 429 Gaiseric's Vandals crossed from Spain to Africa and in summer 430 besieged Hippo Regius. The city's bishop, Augustine, died in August, in the third month of the siege; a year later the Romans abandoned the city, and in 439 the Vandals took Carthage too.
