Sukhothai, the first Thai kingdom
Thai chiefs throw off Khmer rule

Around 1238 Thai chiefs expelled the Khmer governor from Sukhothai, and Si Inthrathit became its first king. Sukhothai is regarded as the first Thai state; under Ram Khamhaeng it spread Theravada Buddhism, and tradition credits him with the Thai script. In the 15th century the kingdom was absorbed by Ayutthaya.
