Tanshihuai unites the Xianbei
A new steppe power from Manchuria to Dzungaria
Around 156 the chieftain Tanshihuai united the Xianbei tribes that had taken over the Mongolian steppe after the Xiongnu, dividing his realm into three wings. He refused the title of king offered by the Han and routed a Han expedition in 177, but after his death around 181 the union fell apart.
