Trajan takes Ctesiphon
Legions reach the Persian Gulf, the high tide of Roman conquest

In 114–116 Trajan occupied Armenia and Mesopotamia and took the Parthian capital Ctesiphon; according to Cassius Dio, on the shore of the Persian Gulf he regretted being too old to march on India like Alexander. Revolts behind his lines forced him back, and in 117 Hadrian returned the conquests to Parthia.
