The first independent dynasty of Islamic Egypt
In 868 the Turkic commander Ahmad ibn Tulun came to Egypt as an Abbasid governor and soon became its de facto independent ruler. He built a new capital, al-Qata'i, whose mosque still stands, and took Syria; in 905 the Abbasids regained Egypt.
