Battle of Bạch Đằng
Stakes hidden in a riverbed wreck Kublai Khan's fleet
General Trần Hưng Đạo repeated a trick the Vietnamese had used against the Chinese back in 938: iron-tipped stakes were driven into the riverbed and hidden by the tide. The retreating Yuan fleet was lured into the estuary, and when the water fell the ships were impaled and destroyed or captured. So ended the third Mongol invasion of Đại Việt.
