Battle of Shelon
Moscow routs Novgorod's militia; the republic's end draws near
When Novgorod sought an alliance with Lithuania, Ivan III sent his armies against it. On the Shelon the Muscovites routed a far larger Novgorod militia. Under the Treaty of Korostyn Novgorod renounced the Lithuanian alliance, and seven years later, in 1478, it lost its independence.
