Devashtich, lord of Panjakent, rose against the Arabs and held out in a castle on Mount Mug until he surrendered in 722 and was executed. In 1932 a shepherd found a basket of documents in the ruins; some 80 texts in Sogdian, Arabic and Chinese became the key to reading Sogdian.
