Execution of Túpac Amaru
The Spanish behead the last Sapa Inca
In 1572 Viceroy Francisco de Toledo sent an army against Vilcabamba, the last Inca stronghold in the jungle. The Sapa Inca Túpac Amaru was captured and on 24 September beheaded on the main square of Cusco before a huge crowd; the Neo-Inca State was no more.
