Founding of St. Augustine
The Spanish found the oldest city in the United States

On 8 September 1565 Pedro Menéndez de Avilés landed in Florida and founded San Agustín, and soon massacred the French Huguenots of nearby Fort Caroline. St. Augustine is the oldest continuously inhabited European-founded city in the United States.
