The Futa Jallon jihad
The first of the states born of the Fula jihads
Around 1725 (or 1727 by other accounts) the Muslim Fula of the Futa Jallon highlands, led by Karamoko Alfa, launched a holy war against their non-Muslim neighbours and local rulers. An imamate arose with its capital at Timbo and a council of notables; captives taken in raids were sold to Europeans on the coast. Futa Jallon inspired later jihads in Futa Toro and, in the 19th century, in Sokoto and Massina.
