Great Northern War
Twenty years of war with Sweden for the Baltic
Russia, Denmark and Saxony attacked Charles XII's Sweden; in November 1700 the Swedes routed the Russian army at Narva, but Peter I rebuilt his army and created a navy. After Poltava and victories at sea, the Peace of Nystad in 1721 gave Russia Livonia, Estonia, Ingria and part of Karelia.
