War of the Spanish Succession
Europe fights over the last Spanish Habsburg's legacy

Charles II of Spain died childless, leaving his crown to Louis XIV's grandson Philip of Anjou, and England, the Dutch Republic and Austria went to war against France and Spain. The peaces of Utrecht and Rastatt (1713–1714) kept Philip V on the Spanish throne but gave Austria the Spanish Netherlands and Italian lands, and Britain Gibraltar.
