Iran–Iraq War
Eight years of trench warfare, and the border stayed put

On 22 September 1980 Saddam Hussein invaded Iran, counting on post-revolutionary chaos. The war became an attritional slaughter of human-wave attacks, strikes on cities and tankers, and Iraqi use of chemical weapons. By various estimates hundreds of thousands died. In August 1988 both sides accepted UN Resolution 598 and a ceasefire.
