Carnation Revolution
A nearly bloodless coup ends Portugal's dictatorship

On 25 April 1974 officers of the Armed Forces Movement toppled the Estado Novo regime, in power since the 1930s. Crowds filled the streets and put red carnations into the soldiers' rifle barrels. The revolution ended the colonial wars: in 1975 Angola, Mozambique and other colonies became independent.
