Bangladesh Liberation War
Nine months of war, and a new nation on the map

In March 1971 the Pakistani army launched Operation Searchlight against the Bengali national movement in East Pakistan. Mass killings followed; by various estimates 300,000 to 3 million died, and some 10 million refugees fled to India. In December India entered the war, and on 16 December the Pakistani forces surrendered in Dhaka. Bangladesh was born.
