First Nagorno-Karabakh War
The dispute over Karabakh turns into an Armenian–Azerbaijani war

In 1988 the Armenians of Nagorno-Karabakh demanded to leave Azerbaijan; pogroms and mutual expulsions led to full-scale war by 1992. An estimated 20,000–30,000 died, about 300,000–350,000 Armenians and over 700,000 Azerbaijanis fled. The 1994 ceasefire left Armenian forces holding land internationally recognised as Azerbaijan.
