The Khanate of Khiva is founded
The Oxus changes course and the capital moves to Khiva
In 1511 the Uzbek princes Ilbars and Bilbars took power in Khwarazm and founded a khanate with its capital at Urgench. When the Oxus moved away from the city, the capital shifted to Khiva in the early 17th century; its walled inner town, Itchan Kala, survives almost intact.
