German Peasants' War
Europe's largest uprising before the French Revolution

In the summer of 1524 peasants rose in south-western Germany; by the spring of 1525 the revolt had spread across Swabia, Franconia and Thuringia, and the Twelve Articles demanded an end to serfdom. The princes' armies crushed the rebels, up to a hundred thousand people died, and the preacher Thomas Müntzer was executed.
